And if there´s ever a time when the murky bottom of a Swedish lake becomes a source of excitement, it´s at the start of the crayfish season. For although the age-old ban on fishing the crayfish between 1st November and the 1st Wednesday in August was abolished in 1994, the traditional kräftskiva celebration associated with the first catch is very popular. These days, however, very few people do their own fishing, and the abundance of cheap, imported crayfish in supermarkets means people can afford to munch their way trough mounds of these crustaceans troughout August and well into September.
